If you would like to go to the beach Viareggio, Pietrasanta and Forte dei Marmi are the best alternatives. Viareggio is the closest destination from Lucca. There are direct- buses- and trains (by train about 20 minutes and bus 50) and a ticket costs about 3 euros. From Viareggio you can then take a bus to Pietrasanta and Forte Dei Marmi. In Viareggio and Pietrasanta you will find a small part of the beach that is free of charge, otherwise you have to pay to enter the various resorts. Viareggio is, however less expensive. The resorts vary in price and some have pool.
In the region Liguria, about 2 hours from Lucca, is the 120 km of coastline, Cinque Terre, "the five villages" located, consisting of Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. This beautiful place is on the Unesco's world heritage list and since 1997 a national park. Here you can spend a lovely day of swimming, eating good food, shopping, and walking between the five villages (but there are also trains between them). If you do not have time to visit all the villages at the same day, there are two you should not miss, Riomaggiore (left), with the best dining and shopping opportunities and Vernazza (right upper picture), with the best swimming opportunities. To get to Cinque Terre you can go by train, and often with a change in the city La Spezia.
