If you would like to go to the beach Viareggio, Marina di Pietrasanta and Forte dei Marmi are the best alternatives. Viareggio is the closest destination from Lucca, and there are both direct- buses- and trains (by train 20 minutes and bus 50). The ticket costs about 3 euros. From Viareggio you can then take buses to Pietrasanta and Forte Dei Marmi. On the beaches you will find a small part that is free of charge (spiaggia libera), otherwise you have to pay to enter the various resorts. Viareggio is, however, less expensive. The resorts vary in price and some have also pool.
Cinque terre
In the region Liguria, about 2 hours from Lucca, is the 120 km coastline, Cinque Terre, "the five villages" located, consisting of Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. This beautiful place is on the Unesco's world heritage list and since 1997 a national park. Here you can spend a lovely day of swimming, eating good food, shopping, and walking between the five villages (but there are also trains between them). If you do not have time to visit all the villages at the same day, there are two you should not miss, Riomaggiore (left), with the best dining and shopping opportunities and Vernazza (right upper picture), with the best swimming opportunities. To get to Cinque Terre you can go by train, and often with a change in the city La Spezia.
